Starting Solids, not a big hit!

Gavin tried rice cereal for the first time on Monday, July 27th. The verdict: YUCKY! We were told at his 4 month appointment that we could start, however we decided to wait until 5 months. He is not to sure of it, that is for sure... We will keep on trying, no rush! Notice how happy he was for the first picture! Pictures shown in order.........

FIRST ATTEMPT:

Got to love that face!
SECOND ATTEMPT:
NO THANK YOU!

5 Months Old!

Gavin is now 5 months old. I can't believe it. No doctor's appointment this month, so no stats to share. If we had to guess, he is probably about 16 pounds, and around 26 inches maybe..... We know his head is getting bigger, because our favorite fisherman's hat you often see him wearing is too small.

What does 5 months bring.... well, we are introducing rice cereal this month, the first couple attempts have not been successful, but we will keep on trying.

His sleeping is hit or miss. At times, he goes down for naps with no problem, in fact, we just put him down, he turns on his side, hugs his "woof" and falls asleep. However, other times, he screams bloody murder whether we are holding him or he is laying in his crib. At night, we have pretty much nailed our routine (Play, Bath, Bottle, Rock, Bed), no more book right now, he is to eager to eat, he knows what is coming next, and is always VERY ANXIOUS for his night feeding, and then usually goes to bed with no problem. He is still waking up once or twice a night, to nurse, but falls right back to sleep. He goes to bed between 6:45-7:30 typically, and gets up between 6-7am. This whole sleeping thing is definitely the most difficult to understand so far, but we will get it eventually.

He is definitely teething, we really don't see anything yet, but all the signs are pointing to teething. Drool, drool, drool, his fists are constantly in his mouth, along with everything else in the house, low grade fever, diarrhea, and crankiness.... that could be effecting his sleep also.

Milestones:

Mimicking, hysterical, when Chris pretends to cough, Gavin does it now, it is so funny!
Reaching for toys and people (mommy and daddy, especially)
Holds toys, objects
Holds head up
Sits supported
Can pull from sitting to standing, bears weight on his legs
Supports himself on his arms, and holds his head up when on his tummy
Babbling, Laughing
Turns to the person who is talking to him

He already has a personality like his mom and dad, sticking his tongue out at the camera.

Whale of a time!

Another purchase that was made this weekend was a new baby pool for Gavin (Thanks Nani)! Getting to the pool is quite the ordeal these days, so now we have one in the back yard. On those hot days, all we have to do is step out our back door and there it is. When Gavin gets tired, or hot, we can get out and be home. It has been to many times where we pack everything up to go to the pool, only to turn around 20 minutes later to come home. Gavin and I tood a dip in the pool yesterday, and he really seemed to enjoy it. Hey, when he is napping, I can even relax in the pool by myself! Anyone want to come over for a pool party???

Daddy blowing up Gavin's whale pool, he probably should have done it outside!
Look at that crawl stroke

Bathtime just got better!

A friend of ours told us about this ducky bath for babies that you can use when they are starting to sit up on their own. So, this past weekend we went out and found one for Gavin. He is getting a little to big for his bathtub that we have been using since he was a baby, and at times it is really hard to get in those really important places, like his neck, which always seems to have gunk hiding in the crevices. Anyway, HE LOVED IT! We still have to support him while sitting, but he will be doing it on his own in no time. He was splashing around, having a good old time. It is much easier to get in some of those areas that were hard to get before. For $10 bucks, you can get one at Target, and it can be used as a bathtub, or a mini pool outside. It will be great to travel with, because it deflates, we can't wait to use it at the beach!

Gavin loves laughing with his daddy!

Sunday Funday at the Pool!

We purchased this floaty for Gavin before we went to Mexico, and he could not sit up in it, he just fell forward face-first in the water. Here it is a month later, and he fits perfectly! He loved it!

Tummy Time and Head Control

Gavin has been spending a lot of time on his tummy. He is actually starting to like it now, he could not stand it when he was a younger. Here we had him follow the ball back and forth to work on his head control .

Music by the Pond

Friday nights are a little different these days, last night we attended Music by the Pond, and it was very cool. Every third Friday of the month, throughout the summer, our neighborhood has a band play by the water, from 7-9pm. It was a very family-friendly event. Their were tons of people with children of all ages. We brought our chairs, a blanket, some beverages, and snacks, and set up on the lawn to listen to the music. The Wehner and Munn Families joined us. It was great, the babies seemed to enjoy it, and so did we. Can't wait until next month!

Never thought I would see this in my garage!

Playdate

Today, Gavin had a playdate with his friends Lily and Eloise. It was a good time, for mommies and babies! I think the babies may have all been napping at different times, which made it hard for them to "hang out", but they did all stay up long enough for us to get a great photo of the group! Mommies had fun trading stories, asking "does this happen to you?" questions, and enjoyed a yummy lunch! Can't wait for more playdates!

Boat Ride

On the Sunday after the 4th, after everyone cleared out, Adam took us for a boat ride. We were a bit concerned at first b/c Gavin is still so small, but we were sure to have a life vest on hand his size. He loved it! He actually fell asleep within the first 5 minutes of the boat ride, then woke up towards the end.

Gavin's first 4th of July

We spent the 4th of July at Adam's and Renee's on the lake. This has become an annual event, however, this year will be the last time at this house, since they are in the process of selling it! We headed down Friday night, and stayed through Sunday.... We had so much stuff to bring for Gavin, that we figured we might as well. It was a great weekend! There were a lot of different people, with their families, and friends. Gavin did a great job. He would nap regularly throughout the day, went swimming in the pool, and just hung out. Unfortunately, he was not awake for the fireworks, they were let off way past his bedtime. He even slept through the fireworks (we made sure there was plenty of white noise to help him, and he was at the furthest point in the house). Here are some cute pics!

4 Months Old!

4 months I cannot believe it! Gavin is growing up way to fast! Our Doctor's appointment this month consisted of mommy asking TONS of questions, I came in with a page filled, front and back with questions. I mean come on, it has been 2 months since our last visit. Anyways, here are the latest stats: Gavin weighs 15 lbs, we thought maybe 16, but 15 it is, and he is 25 inches long. He was in the 50th percentile for his height, and 60th percentile for his weight. The Smoakster (Dr. Smoak) said he looks great! He said he was very alert and had a strong grip. As for my questions, here are a few: I will be going back to work, should I start supplementing in case I do not have time to pump? Answer: Yes, start off by giving him 1 bottle of formula per day, so he can get used to it. Should he be sleeping through the night? Answer: Not necessarily, he should be sleeping longer stretches, but may still wake up in the middle of the night to nurse. Should we let him cry it out at night? We tried it, and he would cry for 1-2 hours...Answer: It is up to you, babies will cry as long as they can, especially if they know you are going to come and pick them up, some babies will cry so hard the vomit (SAY WHAT??).. But, it works, usually after 3-4 days. So, those are a few sample questions, I will not bore you with the rest. Is Gavin sleeping through the night, no, he wakes up once or twice.... Do we let him cry it out, no, we are suckers......Are we supplementing, yes, one bottle a day, right before bed.

We have been doing pretty well with our nightly routine, which has been very nice. We do a bath, book (if he is up for it), bottle, then rock him to sleep. He is so used to this routine that he falls asleep pretty quickly.

As for sleep, he does not do to bad. He is very predictable! After he wakes up, anywhere between 6-8am, he is ready to go down for a nap about an hour and a half later. In the morning, he takes a 1-2 hour nap, gets up, we have play time, nurse, sometimes we run errands, then he goes down for his afternoon nap. This nap can be anywhere from 30min- 1 1/2. Then he is up, and we play, run errands, nurse, etc. He will, at times, take a 3rd nap in the late afternoon. If not, we start our bedtime routine a bit earlier. He goes to bed at night anywhere from 7-8:30pm. He has been waking up, lately, between 12am-2am, then waking up around 5-6 am, to nurse, and goes back to sleep until around 8am. We may not have an exact schedule, but I believe that is pretty difficult at this age, they are changing by the day!

Gavin is definitely teething. He is putting everything under the sun in his mouth, except the teething toys I bought him, go figure. He is also drooling all of the time, he soaks his clothes. I have to get better with putting bibs on him.

Milestones:

Gavin rolled over, actually he did this about a week before he turned 4 months!

Laughing, he laughs all of the time, it is absolutely amazing, he has a beautiful laugh

Reaching out for toys, and smaller objects

Reaches out for us

He found his toes, he is always sucking on his toes, in the bath tub, whenever he can

He plays with his toys, grasping them tightly

Head control is almost perfected

He sits supported

Coos, and makes tons of different sounds

Did I mention how much we love him!!! We can't even picture our lives without him!

Father's Day

Chris had a wonderful first Father's Day. We made him blueberry pancakes for breakfast, actually I did, while him and Gavin were passed out in bed upstairs. Then, we scheduled him an hour massage. When he came back home, we packed up and headed down to the lake for a relaxing day at the pool, where we swam, spent time with family and friends and had a great meal! First Father's Day a Success! Thanks for being such a great daddy!

Here are Chris and Gavin after Chris opened his Father's Day Gifts
We enlarged and framed a good daddy and son picture
along with a nice family picture, and a tool bag
